Bengali cinema and political circles are mourning the loss of Joy Banerjee, the popular actor-turned-politician, who passed away on Monday at the age of 62. He had been battling severe respiratory complications linked to pneumonia and other health conditions.
Banerjee, who had been admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata earlier this month, was placed on ventilator support on August 17 after his condition worsened. Despite medical intervention, he breathed his last at around 11:35 a.m. on August 25.

Joy Banerjee entered the Bengali film industry in the early 1980s, debuting alongside Debashree Roy in Aparupa. His charm and powerful performances quickly earned him recognition, with notable roles in films like Chopper and Hirak Jayanti, which cemented his place as one of the prominent faces of Bengali cinema during the 80s and 90s.
In later years, Banerjee shifted focus to public service and politics. Representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he contested Lok Sabha elections in 2014 from Birbhum and again in 2019 from Uluberia. Although unsuccessful in both attempts, he remained an influential figure within the party and was known for voicing his opinions on cultural and political issues in West Bengal.
